 I never tire of being amazed at the talent of Jack London, how well he succeeds in works on any topic: about people, nature, animals. And they are all written so colorfully, succinctly, as if you are reading about some people you know well.I think if the point here is that London itself has tried so many activities and works in life that its life experience itself was very interesting.

The story "A Piece of Meat" describes the life of a middle-aged boxer, whose career is short-lived. He enters the ring with the sole purpose of feeding himself and his family. Jack London knows firsthand what boxing is. He himself repeatedly entered the ring, so this topic is quite close to him. This little story is one of Jack London's strongest stories. As always, the story turned out to be very realistic and life-like. While reading this story, I completely immersed myself in the atmosphere of a boxing match, as if I was there, near the ring, and worried with all my heart for the main character.I thought: “ God forbid he will lose” The title theme of the work is relevant at all times: the struggle between old age and youth. Old age with its experience, youth with its strength. Who will win? However, alas, a person gains experience, while losing his youth and strength. Sooner or later, life puts everything in its place: young boxers take the places of great champions. And the great, in turn, retire, proudly giving way.

The ending of the story is very bitter, will not leave anyone indifferent. Be he generous, wise or brave, he coudn’t be winner Truthful and cruel, which is why it sinks even more into the soul. It is very touching and sad to read about how some idols burn out and new ones take their places.
